Church of the Holy Archangels (Taxiarches)
How many places can tell more than 2,400 years of history from the very same spot?
The Church of the Holy Archangels is one of Ermioni’s most important monuments. Beneath its foundations lie the remains of the ancient Temple of Chthonia Demeter, one of the most significant sanctuaries of the ancient city. The present-day church was built in the 17th century, incorporating ancient architectural elements, many of which can still be seen in its walls.
On 11 February 1827, this very place became the setting for another important chapter in Greek history. Here, the representatives of the Third National Assembly took their oath before proceeding to the nearby Assembly House (Vouleftiko), where the historic sessions of the Assembly began.
